Meet Our Experts: Laura
Medallion Labs is more than food tests and accurate results. We’re a team of scientific experts finding innovative ways to serve our customers better. To know us best, you need to know the people behind the numbers. Find out who makes us great and why Medallion Labs is the partner of choice for top food companies.
Laura is a method development scientist for Medallion Labs. An experienced veteran, Laura has worked with us for the last 15 years. She got her start at Medallion Labs by supporting routine analysis across wet chemistry and chromatography groups. From there, Laura moved into the multi-residue analysis lab working with pesticides. She worked her way through that area, eventually leading the routine testing. In 2021, Laura transitioned into her current role in method development. This extensive professional background benefits clients who can count on her broad knowledge—especially in regard to GC and LC systems. As Laura likes to say, “I usually have a trick up my sleeve if something breaks down.”
She is a lover of challenges and problem-solving. Laura finds that work in method development embodies both of those passions. For her, it makes every day at Medallion Labs unique. She appreciates the variety of assignments and the team she collaborates with. There’s also a true excitement for her work, “I love the suspense of what the data will reveal!”
An Expert Resource for Food Testing Clients
Laura’s time at Medallion Labs is split equally between running experiments at the bench and analyzing the subsequent data used to guide our customers’ decisions. It’s an ideal opportunity to handle both sides of the process. In Laura’s opinion, helping customers is what Medallion Labs does best. We are rooted in a culture of quality, doing our very best to deliver accurate results on time. However, the drive to succeed for customers extends beyond the scientists. Laura proudly boasts, “you can’t find better customer service representatives. They’re kind, caring, and quick to respond to customers’ inquiries.”
Finding Ways to Answer Client Questions
Her work isn’t always easy, and that’s part of the reason why Laura loves her role so much.
I’ve had to overcome challenges with the instrumentation required for our testing. Losses of sensitivity, losses of communication, reproducibility issues — the list goes on. The fix isn’t always fast and sometimes requires some vendor interference — but each time, I learn something new, and that prepares me for the next challenge.
She views every test—and challenge—as a growth opportunity. One such example is working with pesticides. Currently, Laura is working on expanding our pesticide testing capabilities. Her work will give Medallion Labs the opportunity to provide customers with even more data points relevant to pesticide safety.
Advice for Aspiring Food Scientists
According to Laura, a start in science is a must, but it doesn't necessarily need to be in food sciences. She earned her college degree in biology. Laura said, “almost everything I’ve learned on my journey here has been through experience and a persistence to learn and grow.” Not surprisingly, Laura also suggests a strong background in math. It’s especially helpful when calculating results for customers.
