Method Reference:
ASTM Standard F 1884-04 “Standard Test Methods for Determining Residual Solvents in Packaging Materials”
Method Description:
Sample is cut into small pieces, mixed with water and internal standard, then sealed. After heating for a period of time, the residual solvents are released into the headspace above the sample. A portion of this headspace is removed and injected onto the gas chromatograph for identification and quantitation.
Information Required by Submitter:
If known, please supply the composition of plastic submitted. Background information about the sample can be very helpful in identifying the presence of solvents or solvent categories. Upon submission, be sure the sample and analysis type is readily visible to assure the sample container is not opened until ready for analysis.
Additional Information:
This assay measures the following solvents that may be in/on packaging materials: Ethanol, Isopropanol (2-Propanol), Methanol, n-Propanol (1-Propanol), Tetrahydrofuran, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Ethyl Acetate, 2-Propyl Acetate, Benzene, n-Propyl Acetate, Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene, Styrene, Benzaldehyde, Acetone, 2-butanone, isobutanol, isopropyl acetate, trichloroethylene, butanol, 2 ethoxy ethanol, isobutyl acetate, n-butyl acetate, m,p-xylene, methyl cellosolve acetate, o-xylene, ethyl cellosolve acetate, butyl cellosolve, propylene glycol butyl ether and Total Hydrocarbons (C-8 t C-14).
By their nature, solvents are very volatile; therefore, special sampling and shipping precautions are required. To sample from rolls of material, cut away and discard the first layer from the outside of the roll. Gather the next 3 or 4 layers and immediately wrap it in enough aluminum foil (shiny side inside – touching the sample) to assure the sample is completely enclosed.
If the sample is a resin that is used in making film, it must be sent in a GLASS JAR (no exceptions) with aluminum foil in between lid & sample and again with shiny side inside. Tag the sample or use a dry label clearly indicating the type of assay to be performed to assure the sample is not opened prior to analysis. Refrain from using any type of marker as it may contaminate the sample.
