- Method description
This method allows the quantitative determination of fructans in foods. The fructans in a sample are digested enzymatically and quantified using liquid chromatography and measured as %. The official AOAC method for fructans quantification, performed by Medallion Labs, expresses the fructans result as an equivalence to chicory root fructans which have an average degree of polymerization (DP) of 10 units (i.e. 1 glucose unit plus 9 fructose units). If your sample does not originate from chicory root or has a DP different from 10, please specify the DP as well as the source of fructans.

- Additional information
Fructans are mixtures of molecules that consist of fructose moieties linked to each other by beta(2-1) bonds. A glucose moiety may be linked to the end of the chain by an alpha(1-2) bond as in sucrose. The degree of polymerization may vary from 2 (or 3 in the case where there is a terminal glucose) to several hundred. The main components of fructans are inulin (primarily DP 2-60 with a typical average DP of 10 or greater) and oligofructose (DP 2-10) where DP is the Degree of Polymerization.
Common Fructans/Inulin Test Testing Questions
We make every effort to keep our methods and detection limits up to date according to the latest standards and qualifications. If you have any questions regarding the limit of detection/quantification or method references, please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-245-5615.
Our standard turnaround time is 10 business days for most assays. There are some assays that require a longer turnaround time. We also offer a RUSH service that is half the time of the standard turnaround time of the assay at double the cost of the assay. A few assays that we provide cannot be rushed due to the nature of the test. Please check the specific assay you are interested in regarding the ability to RUSH the turnaround time.
This is completely up to you! Our general recommendation is to match the test with your goals. For example, if your goal is to label the Fiber in your product, a dietary fiber test may be better. If your goal is to measure the amount of Fructans/Inulin, then this test would be a better fit. Of course, you can also run both!
