Ascorbic acid is extracted into a methanol/metaphosphoric acid solution. The ascorbic acid is converted to dehydroascorbic acid, which is then reacted with ortho-phenylenediamine to form a fluorophor whose intensity is proportional to vitamin C concentration. A blank is simultaneously run on each sample to determine the level of background fluorescence. The total vitamin C content can then be calculated by comparing the net fluorescence to a standard curve.
Information Required by Submitter:
Please supply an estimate of expected vitamin C content. Notify Medallion Labs if the vitamin C source in your sample is encapsulated. Samples of “Vitamin Concentrates” should be clearly labeled.
This test is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited through A2LA, Certificate # 2769.01.
Vitamin concentrate results typically have higher-than-normal method variability.
