This method determines the percent of chloride in food products or ingredients by potentiometric back titration of the silver ions after reaction between silver and chloride ions are complete.. Salt from a sample is extracted in water. Then, in an acidic environment, the chloride is precipitated with a known amount of excess silver nitrate. The excess silver nitrate is back-titrated with potassium thiocyanate.

This method determines the total amount of chloride ion present in a sample by indirect potentiometric back titration of the ions. The total amount of chloride ion is then expressed as a percentage of the total sample. All sources of chloride present in the sample are accounted for in the final result.
The percent salt can be calculated from the % chloride. Please note that all chlorides in the sample will be calculated as sodium chloride if salt is requested.
